Gloss Meters

Gloss meters is used for measuring the specular reflection gloss of a surface in which the gloss is determined by the measurement of the amount of reflected light at an equal but opposite angle from an angle of a beam of light.

Its parameters conform with JJG696-2002.

The Gloss is an aspect of the visual perception of objects in which the attribute of surfaces causes them to be shiny or lustrous, metallic or matte appearances. Thus, creating a visual impression when a surface of the object is being evaluated. The more the direct light is being projected and reflected, the more impression gloss is visible.

Companies have been introducing new innovations for gloss meters such as the new micro-gloss in which it is said to combine the portability and ease-of-use. More innovations have introduced and these include:

l  New auto-diagnosis feature which it checks the calibration values and improves the accuracy of the instrument. Whether in the plant or in the field, with the calibration holder, the standard is always at hand and protected. The auto diagnosis tells when to calibrate and even checks if the standard is clean.

l  New simple UI that offers a clear menu structure and new scroll wheel allow even inexperienced users to use the instrument.

l  New gloss meters offer multiple readings per sample with full statistics such as pass/fail and differences which allow up to 50 target values and sample storage can be easily maintained using the new scroll wheel.

l  The included software allows a direct data transfer to Excel, and the results are immediately displayed in a professional QC report with graphs for easier documentation.

Applications

Applications vary from quality control in surface finishing lines to production control in plastics fabrication plants. Gloss meters are used to test automotive interior and exterior parts, furniture, white goods, building materials, and more.

Gloss meters are used in production, laboratory, and field measurements which are available in both hand-held and bench-top models. In the laboratory and field, gloss meters are used in research and development, quality check and analytical functions while it more use in painting, coating, automobile, plastic, ceramic, paper, and metal industries are among the industries that use gloss meters as a regular basis.

These gloss meters measure the reflection of light off a surface. The quantity of light is determined by shining light from a defined angle at a surface and then measuring the light opposite the source of light at the same angle. The measurement is then compared to a standard. The most common angle for measurement is 60°, although readings at other angles are used depends on the sample application.

Observation angles depend upon the surface and the application in which the surface is used. The analyzing of the technical aspects of gloss meter, it offers an amount of reflected light from the sample surface with a specific defined refractive index. While now most gloss meters have an auto calibration, it is recommended to use a checking standard tile as the standard tile has assigned gloss values for each angle which are traceable to National Standards.

International standards are available that define the specification and required method for different types of gloss meters used for different types of materials such as ceramics, paint, plastics, metals, paper, and automobile.
