The turbine flow meter also known as an axial turbine are used for the measurement of natural gas and liquid flow. The mechanical turbine rotating in the liquid flow around an axis is translated by the turbine flow meter into a user-readable rate flow such as gpm and lpm. It uses the mechanical energy of the fluid to rotate a “pinwheel” (rotor) in the flow stream. They are useful mainly for monitoring of clean liquid flows in chemical, petroleum and water industries.

l  Turbine Tube - It is used at the outlet of a turbine to induce a negative pressure at its outlet. It helps the turbine to obtain additional pressure head. The higher the head the more is the force of the fluid on the blades of the turbine. A turbine body helps in increasing the power at the output shaft of the turbine.

l  Magnetic Pickup - A magnetic pickup is an important part of a coil wound around a permanently magnetized probe.  When distinct ferromagnetic objects such as gear teeth, slotted discs, turbine rotor blades, or shafts with keyways are passed through the probe's magnetic field, the flux density is modulated.

l  Rotor Support – It helps to support the rotor that is a moving component of an electromagnetic system in the electric motor, electric generator, or alternator

l  Spindle Motor - A spindle motor is a small, high-precision and high-reliability electric motor that is used to rotate the shaft or spindle. It has long-used ball bearings, which are housed in a metal ring structure around the spindle motor shaft and comprise of small metal balls.

l  Turbine Rotor - A moving component of an electromagnetic system in the electric motor, electric generator, or alternator. The interaction between the windings and magnetic fields which produces a torque around the rotor's axis is the reason why the turbine rotor rotates.

l  Size: Internal diameter range from 6 to 760 mm, (1/4'' - 30'')

l  Maximum measurement: Maximum measurement capacities range from 0.025 Am3/hr to 25,500 Am3/hr, (0.015 ACFM to 15,000 ACFM), for gases and 0.036 m3/hr to 13,000 m3/hr, (0.16 gpm to 57,000 gpm or 82,000 barrels per hour) for liquids.

l  Repeatability Measurements: Typical measurement repeatability is  0.1% of reading for liquids and  0.25% for gasses with up to  0.02% for high accuracy meters. High accuracy meters have linearities of 0.15% for liquids and 0.25% for gasses, typically specified over a 10:1 dynamic range below maximum rated flow.

l  Rangeability: The ratio of flow rates over which the linearity specification applies, is between 10:1 and 100:1

l  Operating Temperature: Operating temperature ranges span -270oC to 650oC, (-450oF to 1200oF)

l  Operating Pressure: Operating pressure ranges span coarse vacuum to 414 Mpa, (60,000 psi)

l  Pressure Drop: Pressure drop at the maximum rated flow rate ranges from around 0.3 kPa (0.05 psi) for gasses to in the region of 70 kPa (10 psi) for liquids.

Turbine flow meters find use in monitoring of clean liquid flows in chemical, petroleum and water industries. One of the petroleum applications of turbine flow meters is the custody transfer of hydrocarbon. In the water industry, turbine flow meters are used in distribution systems between and within water districts.
