Optical Power Meters

GAOTek’s Optical Power Meter is an instrument which is used to measure absolute/relative optical power loss through the length of the fiber optical power. In fiber optic systems, optical power measurement is very basic, just like the electronics multimeter. We can measure the optical network transmission side or the absolute power. The power meter evaluates the performance of the optical terminal equipment. A Power Meter along with a stable light source can measure the connection loss, continuity test and also help to evaluate the fiber transmission quality.

Functions of PON Power Meters

There has been a lot of new technological inventions for improving the general functions of Power Meters. One of the commonly used functions can be the filtering function. The user can place a filter in the output reading to rule out any fluctuating measurement readings.

Also new software techniques usage compensates the slow thermophile detector rise time. New designs used rely on the software algorithms to predict the final, steady-state value of the detector based on the known known natural rise-time.


Optical Power Meters are used to measure the photon energy in the form of current or voltage by using some detection devices like photodiodes, thermopiles or pyroelectric detectors. The three main components are: the interface (detector), the analog board and the digital board.

There are various types of optical detectors like semiconductor-based detectors, thermophile detectors, pyroelectric detectors and photomultiplier tubes. An optical Power Meter should have maximum flexibility to handle different types of detectors. The Operational principles vary between detectors- as some generate current signals, and others voltage signals, while a few more require pulsed input signals.

The next step is post-processing wherein the analog signal is digitalized. In addition to low-noise analog design, a powerful processor and also an advanced digital board allows a high-level of sensitivity which was previously not possible.

Applications and Industries
  • Optical Power Meters are used for testing of single-mode and multi-mode networks, also used for installation and maintenance of Fiber Optic Networks.
  • The Optical Power Level (–dBM) can be measured in local, telecommunications, and CATV networks.
  • The insertion loss can be analysed using an LED or Laser source.
  • Optical Power Meters have automatic wavelength identification, which allows higher efficiency to be achieved during measurement and prevents errors by the user.
