Melt Flow Rate Meter

Melt flow rate meter or melt flow rate index is used to determine the melting flow value of a plastic. It gives the numerical value of the flowing capacity in the plastics during injection. A different standard of temperature and varying pressures are used in various types of materials. It is often used in the plastic industry for quality control of thermoplastics. The method is described in the standards ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133. A small sample is heated above the melting point and it is forced to flow through a capillary using a piston actuated by a specified weight. The melt flow rate is the weight of melt flowing through the capillary.
ASTM D1238 is a standard test method for melt flow rates of thermoplastics by an extrusion plastometer while ISO 1133 is the determination of the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) and melt volume flow rate (MVR) of thermoplastics.
Melt flow rates are often listed in the data sheets of thermoplastic materials. The higher melt flow rate indicates a low material viscosity while the lower melt flow rate indicates a high molecular weight.
The melt flow rate is generally the indicator of average molecular weight and is inversely related to it. For example, a resin with a melt flow rate of 50 grams in 10 minutes indicates a lower molecular weight than one with 10 grams in 10 minutes. A higher melt flow rate material can be easier to process, due to low impact resistant of the physical properties related to molecular weight.
The basic property measured of the melt flow rate test is the melt viscosity or flow resistance of the polymer at a shear stress or load and temperature. Polymer chains of short length and simple geometry will relatively pass one to another easily and offer small flow resistance. In short, the flow resistance and viscosity will yield greater on long chains of high molecular weight and complex structure.
The melt flow rate meters or melt flow rate index generally follows the test standards of ASTM 1238 and the ISO 1133 methods but both methods perform equally but there are some minor differences. Such as Method A which refers to the involvement of making cuts at a timed interval as it exits the extrusion die at a defined test load and temperature. Method B uses a simpler way in which uses the volume. It is recommended to use Method A when testing bulk material and when there is a lack of knowledge or doubt on the stated melt-density value of the resin. It is also recommended when testing a wide range of materials. Method B is suitable to labs that measure the same type of materials frequently with the known knowledge of the melt density.
It is important to do an annual calibration to ensure a reliable and precise measurement can result, especially in the industry. A frequent inspection and replacement if needed of the critical components such as dies, piston rods, and piston feet, should be made on a regular basis.
The melt flow rate meter is an important device in the plastic industry to determine material viscosities and is often used as a part of quality control to test the consistency of the products or material in batches. It is also a valuable indicator of resin degradation caused by the condition from storage or transport. Although it is considered the least accurate method, using a capillary and plate rheometer would improve its accuracy and offers a meaningful viscosity measurement.
