In Lecture 2: Internet and Access Networks, Talha Ibn Aziz, Lecturer at the Department
of CSE at IUT
, covers internet and access networks, as well as what roles access networks play
on the internet. Alternate definitions of the Internet are broken down by using either basic
components or functions. A traditional view of the Internet (as a computer network) is compared
to a more current age definition (with laptops, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, etc). An
alternative view of the internet as an infrastructure that provides services to applications is
explained (incl. Internet Application Programming Interface and Network device protocols). The
lecture also covers various components of the internet including end systems, the network core,
Internet Service Providers (ISPs), hosts, communication links, packet switches, routes or paths,
and transmission rates.
