Smart Metering In India – M2M Based Metering Solution By Xenius
Introduction:
In the video Smart Metering In India M2M by the company Xenius, the inefficiency of
power distribution in India is first explained. Then, the benefits of M2M metering are
explained, specifically emphasizing how converting to this form of metering is
noninvasive. The function of this system is depicted through animation in addition to
a voiceover to narrate what is occurring. Finally, the benefits of the use of this system
are supported by discussing parts of India that are currently using this system.

These bundles of wires are just one of many challenges hindering power distribution. The aggregate’s technical and commercial losses were 30 percent in 2012. Some states have as high as 70 percent, that is a far cry from the target below 17 percent by 2050. The only solution is to add the intelligence of IT to power distribution, that’s what radius has done.

As of now, power distribution needs ma’aming every moment in securing, metering, billing. Do these make the power sector powerful? Not really. The results had left these combs and their consumers in the dark. So what do we do to change all that? First, let’s tell you what we don’t. We don’t change the infrastructure, we don’t change the meters, we don’t change the machines at the back end, so we change the system without any major change. We enable a power distribution company to create near real-time data, real-time energy audit even at the consumer level. Enable intelligent connection disconnection ability, enable the creation of additional benefits such as online and prepaid payment options and mobile apps.

With M2M technology, radius makes all machines talk to each other. We do it by putting these simple but intelligent devices at the main points of distribution: on the distribution substation, the transformer, the poles of feeder pillars of last-mile, and on the meters of consumers. These intelligent devices keep a check on power distribution at all these points. They monitor and communicate revenue units of energy data between any two distribution points. The central monitoring system also gets the data, so at any point of time that discom knows how much revenue unit of energy is transmitted and how much is received by the consumer. But, most importantly, a pilfridge is detected easily with its precise location. The precise geography of a pill fridge is plotted automatically on google map or any other customized GIS of the discom.

Consumers can get an SMS notification of consumption details. They can also monitor their consumption in real-time with a simple mobile app. They can easily monitor any unusual consumption at any time. This empowers them to manage their electricity consumption and if the discom has the provision of prepaid electricity, consumers can recharge online or through the mobile app. There is a section that is supposed to take illegitimate means in the absence of regular provisions of connection. Innumerable weekly markets and slums fall in this category. The prepaid option would give them easy access.

Radius has done successful pilots of the systems at sector 30 of Noida for UP power corporation limited and at an empty bc township in Noida for NTPC electric supply company. These successful pilots are a true demonstration of collaborative understanding of the IT and the power sector. We know that India’s future is not a flame, it’s electric and we are ready with the next version of it. A visible transparent, and interactive version of electricity.
