Gas Detectors: A Layman’s Definition

gas detector layman definition

Exposure to hazardous and combustible gasses at various industrial set ups is a major threat to workers and nearby communities which may put many lives in danger. Exposure to toxic gases can also occur in operations such as painting, fumigation, fuel filling, construction, excavation of contaminated soils, landfill operations, entering confined spaces, etc. Fatal accidents and casualties in plants and industrial factories result from failure of equipments like gas detection systems at such setups.

What are Gas Detectors?

Gas leak detection is a system which helps in identifying hazardous gas leaks at a setup. They are used in detection of gas (combustible, flammable and toxic gases, and oxygen depletion) leaks or other emissions and can interface with a control system so a process can be automatically shut down to avoid any fatal accidents. They are equipped with high reliable sensors which employ an audible alarm to operators in the area where the leak is occurring, giving them the opportunity to leave.

Today, gas detectors are being used for a wide range of applications not only in industrial plants, refineries, fumigation facilities, paper pulp mills but also at set ups like pharmaceutical, manufacturing, aircraft and shipbuilding facilities, hazmat operations, waste-water treatment facilities, vehicles, indoor air quality testing and homes.

Traditionally, Gas detectors come packaged into two main form factors: portable devices and fixed gas detectors. But with new technical advancements and with changing trends and requirements, gas detectors have become portable, compact and wireless.

Gas detectors from GAOTek are bundled with many such advance technical features. GAOTEk’s gas detectors are compact, lightweight, and easy to carry devices that can be used in inspection and detection of gas leaks in industrial and commercial settings. GAOTek’s gas detectors consist of powerful features like advanced signal processing, an efficient microprocessor, high or low leak sensitivity selector, semiconductor gas sensors etc.

Factors for the Growth in the Gas Detector Market

According to global industry analysis report*, the global market for gas detection equipment is projected to reach USD3.2 billion by 2020 driven by growing number of safety and environmental regulations worldwide. With growing number of fatal accidents and no of causalities in industrial setups across the globe; it becomes inevitable for such equipments to become as a mandatory and necessary tool and not a luxury.

Apart from being used for operational safety, the growth of gas detection market is governed by new technological developments in its features and operational systems like handheld portability, wireless, sensor longevity, compactness, greater reliability etc.

Additionally, with huge investments by developing nations in industrial sector and setting up of industrial plants and factories in these nations; has further spurred the growth for the gas detection equipments for coming years. Developing nations have undertaken high infrastructure development activities to shift their economic focus to reduce their dependence on oil.  This is leading to higher demand for gas detection systems as there will be new commercial spaces during the upcoming years.
