Coating Thickness Gauges

GAO Tek’s coating thickness gauges are an instrument for measuring the thickness of a material. Our tool is a non-destructive testing technique as it does not permanently change the material it is testing. GAO Tek’s coating thickness gauges are reliable, high quality, and affordable equipment that provide an accurate measurement and offering an efficient and quick means of inspection or testing. It is compact, easy to carry and portable to allow the user to work in complex conditions.

The increasing use of automation and continual advances in the production or manufacturing industries have raised the demands on the use of gauging systems. Which improves the material qualities such as strength, dimensional accuracy, flatness, surface, and formability.

The innovation of development in measurement technology has allowed us to contribute greatly in ensuring the compliance with industry standards. Our thickness gauges are designed and engineered for long-term use in a various application.

The use of thickness gauges as an ultrasonic non-destructive technique have become popular because of its support to replace the destructive method of measuring the thickness of a material.

A beneficial factor of a precisely finish thickness is when a company fails to meet the coating quality of an incoming material, they waste money reworking the product. Thus, ensuring a proper coating or material thickness is being applied in compliance with a manufacturer’s recommendations. Testing the thickness can reduce the number of reworks and customer returns due to finishing defects.

Today’s thickness gauges are more simplified and are more advanced and sensitive than in the past. Understanding what equipment is available and how to utilize its basics to process control, item quality, and cost control. Depending on the type of coating, the thickness range, the substrate material, and the size and state of the part, operators can swing to any number of measuring procedures. While some companies will provide many solutions, here are the examples of today's generally used or new advancements: magnetic, ultrasonic coating thickness measurement and eddy current.

·         Magnetic gauges – widely used in applications such as nickel coatings. phosphating, paint, plastic and coatings. It is based on the Magnetic Attraction principle, they allow for the quick, precise, non-destructive measurement of non-magnetic coatings applied over ferrous substrates.

·         Eddy current gauges – usually utilized as a part of conductive coatings over non-ferrous metals, for example, anodize or paint over aluminum. This technique allows an accurate reading with even very thin materials through an elimination of the base effect. The technology comes with a feature of scanning option that allows operators to continuously working while also measuring. The feature calculates an average measurement and gives a precise reading for thickness over uneven or finished materials. Its versatility offers the instrument the greatest adaptability for measuring an assortment of covering thicknesses.

·         Ultrasonic gauge – was made as a first handheld instrument, it is designed to measure coating thickness ultrasonically which it works by utilizing a vibration that was sent into the coating by a transducer, then with the assistance of a couplant, it applied to the surface.

Many industries today use an ultrasonic method in their quality programs as it is more time efficient and avoid the use of destructive tests which would require retests or reworks and coating thickness that use an ultrasonic principle also replace the destructive measurement techniques for concrete, wood, and plastics applications.

Regardless of the method used, the operators need to be aware the knowledge of coating thickness testing when operating first time in the operations.
