OTDRs
GAO Tek’s OTDRs are used in the field of fiber optics for testing and troubleshooting fiber optic cables. OTDR stands for Optical Time Domain Reflectometer.  OTDRs are designed to measure the characteristics of optical fibers, such as length, attenuation, and reflections. The main function of an OTDR is to send a short pulse of light into a fiber optic cable and analyze the reflected and scattered light that returns. This enables the OTDR to provide information about the fiber’s length, loss, and the locations of any faults or anomalies along the cable.

GAO’S OTDRs are composed of a laser source, coupler/splitter, optical circulator, photodetector, time measurement system, display, and control panel.

The other common names of OTDRs are OTDR devices, reflectometer units, fiber optic testers, optical cable analyzers, time-domain reflectometer tools, reflectometry systems, optical signal analyzers, fiber optic diagnostic equipment, cable testing instruments, reflective pulse analyzers, light pulse reflectors, fiber testing devices, optical reflection analyzers, pulse-echo testers, and time-of-flight analyzers.

GAO’s OTDRs have the following functions:

  • Distance Measurement: GAO’s OTDRs can accurately measure the length of a fiber optic cable by analyzing the time it takes for the light pulse to travel through the fiber and return. This helps in determining the physical distance between two points in the cable.
  • Loss Measurement: Our OTDRs measure the signal loss (attenuation) along the fiber optic cable by analyzing the strength of the reflected or backscattered light. This allows technicians to identify areas of excessive loss and pinpoint the locations of splices, connectors, or breaks that may be causing the loss.
  • Fault Localization: GAO’s OTDRs are used to locate faults or anomalies in fiber optic cables, such as breaks, bends, or high loss points. By analyzing the differences in reflection or backscatter patterns, technicians can identify the exact locations of these faults and plan for necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Reflectance Measurement: Our OTDRs can detect and measure the amount of light reflected at different points in the fiber optic cable. This reflection measurement helps in evaluating the quality of connectors, splices, and other components by assessing their ability to minimize signal reflections.
  • Fiber Characterization: Our OTDRs provide information about the overall quality and performance of fiber optic cables. They can assess parameters such as fiber attenuation, splice and connector loss, and fiber uniformity, helping technicians evaluate the suitability of the fiber for specific applications.

GAO Tek’s OTDRs are rugged, versatile, and precision measurement instruments. They comply with applicable industry standards such as IEC 61010, IEC 60529, TIA-568, ANSI/TIA-1096-A, and MIL-STD-1344.

GAO Tek’s OTDRs help our customers comply with relevant U.S. government regulations such as:

  • FCC (Federal Communications Commission).
  • National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standards.
  • Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS).

GAO Tek’s OTDRs help our clients in complying with relevant Canadian government regulations such as:

  • Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).
  • Health Canada Regulations.
  • Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Regulations.

GAO's OTDRs have the following applications:

  • Fiber Optic Network Installation: GAOTek’s OTDRs are used during the installation of fiber optic networks. They help technicians verify the integrity and quality of the installed fiber optic cables, ensuring that they meet the required specifications and performance standards.
  • Fault Location and Troubleshooting: When there are issues with fiber optic cables, our OTDRs are used in locating and troubleshooting faults. By analyzing the backscattered or reflected light, technicians can pinpoint the exact location of breaks, bends, or other faults in the cable.
  • Fiber Optic Link Characterization: GAO’s OTDRs provide valuable information about the characteristics of fiber optic links. They can measure parameters such as fiber attenuation, splice loss, and connector loss, helping technicians assess the overall quality and performance of the link.
  • Fiber Optic Cable Testing and Certification: GAOTek’s OTDRs are used for testing and certifying newly installed fiber optic cables. They measure the length of the cable, identify any excessive losses or reflections, and ensure that the cable meets the required performance standards.
  • Fiber Optic Link Monitoring: Our OTDRs can be used for continuous monitoring of fiber optic links to detect any degradation or changes in performance over time. This helps in proactive maintenance and ensures the reliable operation of the network.

Our OTDRs can be shipped overnight within the continental U.S. and Canada, and can be shipped globally.
