WDM Transponders (OEO)
GAO’s WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) transponders (OEO) are devices used in optical communication networks to convert optical signals to electrical signals and then back to optical signals. They enable the transmission of multiple signals over a single fiber by multiplexing and demultiplexing signals at different wavelengths.
GAO’s WDM transponders are composed of an optical interface, multiplexer, optical demultiplexer, optical-to-electrical converter, electrical-to-optical converter, and signal processing and regeneration circuitry.
The other common names of WDM transponder (OEO) are optical regenerator, optical transceiver, OEO converter, wavelength converter, transponder, regenerator, optoelectronic converter, optical repeater, and optical regeneration unit.

GAO’s WDM transponders have the following functions:
- Wavelength Multiplexing: Our WDM transponders employ the technique of wavelength multiplexing, where multiple optical signals at different wavelengths are combined onto a single fiber for simultaneous transmission.
- Multiplexing and Demultiplexing: GAO’s WDM transponders can multiplex multiple input signals onto a single fiber and demultiplex them at the receiving end. They combine the individual signals onto different wavelengths of light and then separate them using a demultiplexer.
- Optical-to-Electrical Conversion: Our WDM transponders typically include optical-to-electrical (O-E) converters. They convert incoming optical signals to electrical signals for processing and regeneration, enabling amplification, equalization, and other signal-processing functions.
- Signal Regeneration and Amplification: GAOTek’s WDM transponders can regenerate and amplify optical signals, compensating for any degradation or loss of signal strength that may occur during transmission.
GAO Tek’s WDM transponders are rugged, versatile, and precision measurement instruments. They comply with applicable industry standards such as ITU-T G.694.1, ITU-T G.694.2, ITU-T G.692, ITU-T G.709, Telcordia GR-253, and MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) Standards.
GAO Tek’s WDM transponders help our customers comply with relevant U.S. government regulations such as:
- Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Regulations
- Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX)
- National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Guidelines
GAO Tek’s WDM transponders help our clients in complying with relevant Canadian government regulations such as:
- Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Regulations
- Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
- Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)
GAO’s WDM transponders have the following applications:
- Network Interoperability: Our WDM transponders with OEO conversion capability are used to bridge different types of optical networks. The OEO conversion allows for signal adaptation and ensures compatibility between different network segments.
- Signal Regeneration and Amplification: Our OEO transponders are in regenerating and amplifying optical signals. By converting the optical signal into an electrical signal, the OEO transponder can regenerate and amplify it to restore its quality before converting it back to an optical signal.
- Wavelength Conversion: GAO’s WDM transponders with OEO conversion capability can perform wavelength conversion. They allow for the conversion of an incoming optical signal at one wavelength to an outgoing optical signal at a different wavelength.
- Network Upgrades and Expansion: Our OEO transponders are used in network upgrades or expansions. They provide a means to integrate new equipment or technologies into existing networks without requiring significant changes or disruptions.
- Optical Protection and Redundancy: GAO’s OEO transponders are employed in optical protection schemes and network redundancy architectures. They enable optical protection switching, where the optical signal can be switched to a backup path in the event of a fiber cut or network failure.
Our WDM transponders can be shipped overnight within the continental U.S. and Canada and can be shipped globally.
